Default oil change questions

ok, so I changed my oil today for the first time as opposed to bringing it in. I plan on doing this myself from here on in. First, I read somehwere in the forums to put the pan to catch the oil appx 12" behind the drain plug do to the angle the oil comes out. This is NOT true, or at least in my case it wasn't and my driveway is on a slight hill which would increase the angle. 3-4" tops was the arc of the oil flow.

My main questions are first, the skid plate. What a pain in the ***. Being that I am gonna be changing my oil monthly, what risks do I run if I leave it off? Is this really a bad idea? Next, is everyone changing their filter with every change? Manufacturers usually say every other, but I always did it every change. What are peoples thoughts and opinions on the filter change interval?

Default Bad idea...>>

to leave the undertray off. It's got a bunch to do with aerodynamics and cooling. Also change the filter with every oil change. If you can't afford an $8 filter you can't afford the car...

Thanx for the info on the skid plate, I had a feeling it's on their for good reason, but I figured I'd throw it out there. As for the oil filter I always do it every oil change but hear so many people saying every other and wanted to make sure I wasn't doing more for nothing. This board is such a great source of knowledge.

Default Good plan...>>

Everyone here takes pretty good care of their car for the most part. Not too many would subscribe to the every other change scenario. Turbos run hot and are hard on oil. Follow the recs and you'll be good to go for many miles!

Plus, a new filter each time couldn't hurt anyway...

Default and WHY change the oil monthly? are you tracking? otherwise >

these things are designed for LONG high-speed (100mph+) runs on the autobahn, with a 10k+ interval - just get a good synthetic.
