Default Power Top Woes...

My 5 year old roadster is having problems with the motor on the power top. The motor makes an anemic whirring and now needs manual help to get the top down and is only hesitantly raising the top.
Is there a separate clutch for the motor unit or is it a one piece set-up. I'm thinking about salvage parts. How much of a PIA is the install?
Thanks

Default Anyone know what it would take to make it full manual? In my opinion, the power top just slows...

things down. If/when I start having problems with the motor, I would like to go full manual.

That may be a good solution- I hear the motor weighs over 50 lbs.

Default Yeah, I like the manually operated top... faster, easier, and largely problem free.

If it had an integrated hard tonneau, that might be another story. But it's easy to twist and open (or close) without leaving the driver's seat.

Can't you simply disengage the mechanism (although that would leave the dead weight of the motor, I suppose)?

Default Some of the cars are manual... I imagine parts could be pulled from them.

I don't think that it'd be too much of a pain, but there's not a whole lot of room to play back there, ya know? ;-)

Manual tops are standard on the 180s...225s and such are powered.

Default Amazing. Makes sense, but there's something so "slummin' it" abuot a manual top!

That is unless you're in England and you're driving a new MG, then it's kinda retro and cool...

Default It's not hard to move when the ignition is off, most of the resistance/weight is the motor &

related mechanicals. Though you would probably have to get out to do it. A Miata, it ain't
