Default TT New Brakes - Question

My car is in the tire shop getting new brakes. This particular shop has always been fair and done a good job for me, but something has come up. They said that on top of the new pads, I need new rotors. They said they are below spec and it's common for German cars to replace them more often than American cars. The brake job with labor and parts is just over $900-. Does this sound right?

Default I just installed new front brakes last week. $85 for pad install and $50 for pads.

you may need rotors but they are around $50 each from autozone.com. Around $300 for full set rotors and pads plus labor maybe $200.

Default ECS slotted rotors and Hawk HPS on the way...

rotors for 225 were $300 total, pads about 150. They should be able to do in no more than 2 hrs labor. Someone's trying to get rich off you.

Default Re: TT New Brakes - Question

I just called the Audi dealer to confirm if $900- is a normal price for pads, rotors, and labor. I know most of you do your own work, but I don't have the ability to do so at this time.

Default Bring it to somewhere besides the dealer and save a couple hundred bucks...

installing the brakes is super easy... takes me about 30 minutes a pair to do. 4 bolts, 1 screw, and you're done!

Default that's insane.... stock pads and rotors should be (edited)>>

around $400 for parts, maybe 2-3 hours of labor. That's for all 4 corners. EDIT: I just priced parts on sasponline for my car, a 180Q, and all 4 pads/rotors can be had for $312. Add about $40 if you have a 225Q.

If you're short on funds just leave the old rotors on-- if they're not warped they will last though another set of pads. The "spec" is really conservative-- plenty of thickness is more than likely left.

Default If they are using Audi materials, this is not an unreasonable price.

They're going to charge you at least retail price, plus labor.

Yes, one can order good pads and OEM rotors for < $350, but your tire shop isn't going to charge you internet pricing, and they are going to charge you for 3 hours labor or so.

My front rotors lasted 60k miles plus a track event. My rear rotors are still good after two track events. They were resurfaced at 60k.

Tire/Brake shops really mark up the prices for rotors. It's where they make money.

Default That's cheap.....

compared to my Eurovan which was quoted $621.09 for the fronts and $530.98 for the rears installed by the dealer. I can buy the parts for $360 which is half of the list prices from VW for the same stuff and do the install for less. Ridiculous markup at the dealer for this stuff. For me they are really convenient but the gouging has me special ordering the parts and finding a shop to install.
