Default 2001 Audi TT Quattro - timing belt went at 77K miles

Just lost my timing belt...idling at stoplight only 77K miles, Audi recommends changing at 120Kmiles..any options other than a swap out of the engine head? Anyone hear about timing belts going prematurely? Major $$ here for a swap out...argh!!

Default Old news, you're the most recent of many. We now know to change em at 60k

A few have had luck getting AoA to chip in a little help with the repair bill. Others, not so lucky.

But it is a known issue and there have been many.

Default I took my 2001 in for the 60,000 mile maintenance...

The place I took it too wouldn't let me drive the car off their property. They said mine was about to go at anytime. They even pushed it out of the garage. So I got lucky, It still cost me a grand to get all fixed. My tensioner went bad which caused everthing else to go.

I called Audi and they said there was a recall on the A4 for the same reason but not on the TT. Not enough complaints, the women said.

Sorry to hear. Real bummer so close to the holidays.

Default You must be new here..>>

Nobody that is on this board regularly will go much beyond 60K for a TB change. Too many premature tensioner failures. You may get away with just some new valves if it happened at idle. Good luck..

Default So you're hoping to drive a car with a dealer-rebuilt engine?

I'm cheap but this doesn't seem like an optimal situation from my perspective...

Default Seconded, just can't understand that logic.

I know it's a major repair bill but the peace of mind has to be worth it. All along the fight has been to have AoA notify people of the issue so they can take action and get it fixed before it breaks. Not just to have AoA pay for it.
