Default can i just get the band clamp for the CV joint, also PCV question ...

STFA with no conclusive info

while doing my 40k maintenance this weekend, i found a freshly loose front inner boot. grease had just barely started coming out of it. so i cranked on the one time use clamp with some strange hammerhead shark nosed wire cutters and got it a little tighter. can i source just the clamp or what, the boot is fine and grease is in tact. i have a CPO and i might try to get one out of the dealer, but i'm not holding my breath. i was going to use a regular hose clamp but the clamp mechanism seems to be a bit too high profile. is there a tool for the audi clamps that i can find for cheap?

also, i took off the lower hose to the passenger side intercooler and oil dripped out. i had a feeling there were PCV problems due to oil consumption levels. dripping oil is too much right? i'm also going to see if the dealer can cover this with the CPO, i'm sure they will say that "there's always going to be some oil" but i want to know if it should or shouldn't drip.

other than that all the other 40K stuff was a breeze.

thanks

Default MarTT just went through the CV ordeal (should have shown up in a search), it was not covered by CPO

as it is considered a "wear item"... He was unable to repair himself, and I think it ended up being around $350 for a new boot, clamps, and labor.

Default CV boot clamp is not DIY (I found out the hard way!). Dealer visit - sorry.

See link for my post on this . . .

https://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1380578.phtml

Default that sucks

i can't believe some parts are made so poorly. i'm going to watch mine, i had waaay less grease come out. i tightened it to the point that i could barely turn the boot on the axle. we'll see if it continues to come out. this should be such a hardcore, bullet proof part. seems so fragile. uug.

Default is this an inner or outer cv joint?

either way the answer is yes you can get the clamp.... dealer parts counter can look up the p/n for your application.

Default I had a feeling you'd reply to my post! Not too many times have I been

pissed off at my car . . . the night I was trying to put a new clamp on my cv boot (without proper tools) I was at a real low point - freakin' car was pissing me off! I have done many, many mods/service myself but that one was certainly trial and error, and error. (!)

Default LOL, so I'm that predictable? You need the CV boot "pliers" that allow you to use a torque wrench

(or just a flex handle if you don't care about getting to the right torque spec) to get extra leverage. The problem is not the harder boot material, but the fact that Audi has switched to stainless steel clamps. I honestly did not have the right tool either, I just had the standard CV joint clamp pliers that I've used for years... I was not strong enough to close the clamp with these, so I got them on the "ears" then took my huge channel locks and used them to close the CV joint clamp pliers. Not pretty, but it gave me enough leverage to tighten the clamp adequately.

Before I do another, I'll order the right tool. I've seen it for around $20 online.

Default it's an inner passenger side front

where could i find the official tool that tightens these boogers down if i get the clamp. audi uses so many that it wouldn't be a bad investment. the improv tool that i used worked well. it's not leaking at normal person speeds. i'll have to check later at *ahem* track speeds. i literally think it started oozing on the trip home to do the 40k service. very little grease, all in all maybe an oz. or 2.

thank you for your help. i hate letting those muppets touch my baby.

Default so it's the small clamp that seals the boot around the axle, right?

here's one example... I've seen them for less elsewhere tho...
