Handbrake exploded this morning!
I pulled into the garage, foot on the brake, and turned off the motor. Reached for the handbrake, but really didn't apply any upward pressure to it(I think)when the silver cap exploded forward, carromed off the grey tunnel behind the gearshift, hit the dash, roof, and passenger window before falling to the floor. Looking at it, the plastic shaft has broken right below the silver cap. The brake still works. I feel silly describing it, but I can get across how loud (momentary deafness - shock -"what happened") and fast it was. Took me a minute to realize that a firecracker had NOT gone off, or that I had not been struck by a bullit. Any thoughts? - it still has me rattled. And this was not a "spring-loaded" thing - brake was off, had just driven 1 hr to work.

Silver button popped off? Mine still has part of plastic "rod" sticking...
out of it. In cross-section, looks like six rulers glued on edge - not really round. I just can't get over the sound, and I really can't come up with a reason that would release all that energy... and you;re right - it did scare the crap out of me!

Ralphie's brother was at the 24 Hours of Daytona this year....
nothing like sitting trackside, beer in hand, with bunch of other car nerds, and here walks by a kid who is the spitting image of Ralphie's little brother in that movie, so of course, someone in our group belts out (after the kid's out of earshot) "RALPHIE!!!!! I can't get up!!!!!!" I've never had so much beer come through my nose.
