Default another airbag question for those that have installed racing seats

if i understand correctly, our factory seats have a detection device in the seat to ensure that the airbag only deploys if there is someone actually sitting in the seat. this is required as per u.s. safety regulations.

question is: does anyone definitively know the behavior of this system when the seat wiring harness is disconnected (e.g., because racing seats have been installed and there is no longer anything for it to plug into)? i would not be pleased if, say, the passenger-side airbag did not deploy in an accident because the system thought there was no one sitting in it.

thanks!

Default If our cars have the weight detector, why do we have a manual airbag switch for the passengers side?

Also, the seat heater will run whether someone is in the seat or not. I wonder if we really have the weight activated system or not.

Default

I guess the switch is for baby seats, where you'd have weight but would not want the bag to deploy.

Default Baby up front in rear-facing seat with bag turned off should be fine.

I don't see why not.

Default Correct...

The airbag deact switch was first added to trucks without a rear seat so that rear facing baby seats could be installed without worry of the airbag deploying.

This situation also applies to the TT Roadster which share an I/P with the coupe (complexity reduction for Audi).

Default well, not much reason to unless you have twins. otherwise, with the seat pushed up,

you should be able a baby seat in the rear behind the passenger seat.

Default I never could get the rear-facing seat in the back

but now my daughter is old enough her front-facing seat fits in the back quite well.

Default It's my understanding that the system will try and deploy any bags necessary

and any bags it can in an accident. More of a "better safe than sorry" methodology.

Default assuming the system can tell the difference between ...

"no one sitting in seat" and "no sensor connected", i agree, that behavior makes sense.

but i'd rather not risk my passenger's life to find out.
