Bowl game's big bang goes boom, busts up car
On February 5, 2006 at about 11:44 a.m., Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office received several calls of both a car accident and/or explosion inside a vehicle behind the old Duggan's Fuel Station in the 4500 block of South Santa Fe Drive frontage road.
Upon arrival Deputy Mike Reed discovered a white passenger vehicle with obvious signs of an explosion in the passenger compartment. All the windows were blown out, the vehicle doors were bent towards the outside and the vehicle roof was pushed about 12" higher than normal.
Deputy Reed listed the plate and discovered it listed to 3670 South Grove Street in Sheridan. Sheridan Police were contacted and requested to respond to the address and attempt contact. The occupants of the vehicle, a man and woman
were at the residence. They stated a passer-by gave them a ride home. Sheridan Fire responded and transported them to Swedish Medical Center with possible shrapnel wounds, and very possible broken ear drums.
The subjects told Sheridan officers they had filled an unknown size balloon with acetylene (a very flammable/explosive gas used in metal welding). They were on their way to a Super Bowl party and intended to blow up the balloon while celebrating. They stated that as they drove to the party via West Union and turned north on South Natches Street, the balloon rolled across the back seat, possibly causing static electricity, and igniting the gas, causing it to explode.
Sergeant Al Holstein was contacted and sent an Investigator to Swedish and the Bomb Squad to the scene.
The car's owner will be charged with posession of an incendiary device, a class four felony punishable with up to six years' imprisonment.
