Ok new question, anyone know what kind of oil audi uses when they do the free oil changes?
What Audi puts in at the factory and what dealers use in the USA for specified service is determined by the dealers themselves. I would expect the determination is largely based on cost to the dealer vs. what the dealer is reimbursed by Audi for the service. That logically would seem normal business practice.
Remember the TT owner may be the auto enthusiast. The Audi dealer is more likely to be wanting to make a profit.

It's only "synthetic" because an oil industry marketing board decided that it could be called that when Mobil (which uses predominantly a Group IV PAO basestock in Mobil 1) challenged Castol's calling it a synthetic.
Group III oils are good, better then the older Group II petroleum basestocks, but they cost considerably less than a real PAO synthetic. Castrol's price doesn't reflect that, so they're simply using the "synthetic" label to pocket more profit.
