worn tie rods...
I just had my steering rack replaced. The total came to $1485 which is much cheaper than what the dealer quoted me. When replacing the steering rack, they noticed that my tie rods were word -- something that I've been told for about a year now every time I have my tires swapped or an alignment done. I really wanted to get them replaced as it wouldn't cost me any extra for labor (they had to take out the old tie rods and do an alignment anyways, of course) but I didn't have the $360 to spend for the parts. I really regret not doing it, but I didn't have a choice right now.
I'm probably going to end up getting new tire rods in a month or two anyways (when I have more money), which will require another alignment (ugh). In the meantime I've been looking around and I've realized that $180 per tie rod is ridiculuous and there seems to be a some aftermarket alternatives, some of which are a third of the price (or less). Does anyone have any experience using other than Audi tie rods in their TT? Is it a bad idea? Which ones do you recommend? I'll do anything to save a little money right now.

yeah, I saw those. Last time I remember they recommended I just replace the ends. I wonder why they didn't say that this time. How much time labor should it be to replace the tie rods (or the ends) not including the alignment?

Pretty easy...>>
Pop them off with a tool, unscrew, screw on new ones, re-attach at the hub, set Toe...
Really it's only a 30 minute job not including alignment and you'll only need a toe adjustment after...
