Default Requesting thoughts on Audi TT vs. 911 C4S purchase

I am currently seriously considering the purchase of a 97ish Porsche 911 C4S or a 2004 Audi TT (with the intent of installing an APR stage 3+ on the TT, among other things) I have always wanted the 911 but I am torn on the performance difference between the Stage 3+ TT versus the C4S. A few years ago I owned a 99.5 1.8 A4 with the APR stage 3 kit so I am very familiar with the audi/APR combination as well as the limitations of the drive train when you increase the power by that much. I will be driving the car as a daily driver (12 miles to an from work every day) so I need something reliable yet that handles well and is fast. I currently own an infiniti FX45 but I miss the true sports car feel. Any input would be appreciated, especially from anyone who has had either of the setups mentioned above.

Thanks in advance

Carl

Default Without hesitation, 911 C4S (for your mentioned purpose).

This is my opinion...

The straightline performance rush will wear off and no matter how quick you make the TT, it won't match the overall performance and feel of the 911. This is the pinnacle of the air-cooled 911's and the design of the 993 C4S is arguably the best.

Default I'd have to agree.

One of the daily driver things you have to take into account is that an APR III+ has LESS torque than stock (!) until you get above 3500 rpm. This is what makes the other stage 3 (Modshack TTuned + an APR chip and some exhaust) so very attractive. I spend a lot of my daily commute under 3500 rpm.

Two caveats: First, I don't want to take anything away from APR. They've done a great job with their kit, and for the right application, I'm sure it's a blast. (It's just that daily commute does not come to mind.) Second, a TT with the typical mods you see on a lot of our cars is an absolute blast to drive around. I'm feeling lots of sporty feel, and MKI TTs will always and forever be a more rare sight than a P car.

Yep. The dream car for me - and yet, I love the TT. $ no object, it'd be a C4S

Default The TT is great, but I'd be concerned about stgIII reliability.

I'd rather have that Porsche than just about anything else on 4 wheels.

Default C4S or TT?

Hard to say no to the last of the air cooled 911's.

I just picked up an 01 TTQC with 18K miles. I did the APR 93 upgrade and a Blueflame (Forge) exhaust. Prior to that purchase I test drove a 993 C4 (not s) and was not blown away. I went with the TT because my commute is 70 miles round trip and I park in NYC (Porsche too high bling factor and easier to park TT). Everything worked out great and I couldn't be happier with my modded(sp?) TT, unless of course it was a 993......

If I lived 12 miles from work and had a safe parking lot it would have been the 993 but I do prefer the design cues of the TT and think a slightly used one is a great value....

Default Having had a 993 and now having a TT....>>>

For a daily 12 mile commute, the TT is a far better choice. It's a very civilized car with systems (like AC) that work. You really don't need Stage 3+ to make it a very desirable car. My TT with a handful of bolt-ons is quicker and makes more HP than my old 993 and , as Jack said, is a very satisfying car to drive. Sure the 993 was cool, but from a "bang for the buck" perspective, the TT is a better buy. Save the $10K+ a stage 3 (with other necessary upgrades) will cost you, Chip, intake and exhaust a TT and you'll be way ahead. If you have to have a Porsche, just to have one, go ahead though. Remeber, the 993's are now getting some age on them and won't be cheap to maintain..

Default Boxster?

I got a 1999.5 A4 1.8T Quattro in July that I'm really enjoying as a daily driver and planning on "Stage 3+" modifications this year, but I hope a black Boxster S+GT3 Aero Kit is in my future.

I would say drive all 3 (including the Boxster) and go with the one that feels best. If the next-gen TT offers rear biased AWD then I may consider it. I'm staying away from FWD biased AWD.

911 shape is gorgeous thats for sure, but give me a mid-engine race car. Easy to justify a convertible with a sweet sounding exhaust.
