Default Looking into buying an Audi TT

I am thinking about buying a 2000 Quattro and wanted to know from people that own one if you have had many problems out of it? Are the repairs pretty pricey? Thanks.

Default Not as realiable as a Japanese car. Repairs are not much more than any other car..

Use the search button..

I just bought a 2000 TT 180hp non-quattro less than 6 months ago. I bought it at 59K miles. First thing I did was replace the Timing Belt and tensioner and waterpump. This cost me $700.
At this mileage the suspension was also shot. I spent $$720 for H&R springs and Koni shocks. I also replaced my strut moounts for like $40. Next item that needs to be done are the sway bar bushings (makes lots of noises). That will probably cost me $100-150. After that, I dont forsee spending much more money for the next 30-35K miles.

I have no complaints with the non-quattro (FWD). First of all, I live in SOCAL and dont need the Quattro for winter driving. I also dont have to worry about one more thing to maintain and break (the qauttro system). The 180HP engine is really fine for day to day street driving. It does lack the higher RPM power that the 225 HP offers. To sum it up, I dont regret the FWD 180HP I have. I plan to keep things stock aside from a dual exhaust in the future. Good luck.

Default Re: Looking into buying an Audi TT

My first TT was a 2000 quattro coupe. Excellent car no problems, but I did not have it more than 20,000 miles or so. Key to getting a good deal is knowing the history of the car. Get service records and repair history. If a car has had many failures, stay away. Biggest problem areas are timing belt failures and electronic speedo clusters which are a known part to fail...$700 or more to fix. Timing belts must be changed every 60,000 miles -and done by a good shop. ... TTs are not as dead-bolt reliable as a Honda, but everybody has a Honda (or similar appliance) TTs are wonderful, and this forum makes ownership fun and will save you money in many ways!!! Good luck, let us know what you get.

Default Also, build quality sucks..

Despite what people say here, IMO the build quality of the TT is poor. Yes the TT has very nice build materials, but build quality is poor. Lots of squeeks and creaks in the interior at 60K miles. I hate to do this but I had a 2000 Lexus previously and at 102K miles, the interior and build is like new. Not a single rattle or squeeks. The Lexus interior does not have the same quality materials as the Audi but its very well put together.

Default I disagree

build quality, IMO, is great... have yet to hear the interior squeek/creak and I'm at 60k. The 1.8T engines also seem pretty reliable... problems usually arise from various electrical gremlins (gauge cluster, etc.)

thank you all for responding so far...the car only has 17k on it and the guy has had the service done at a local audi dealer for each oil change, which has been the only thing he has had to do. He just wants to get rid of it b.c he's an older guy and rougher for him to get in and out.

if anyone else has anything to tell me besides the timing belt and gauge please let me know. I'm a college student and I will be paying for this car, so I want to know all the ins and outs. Thanks in advance.

what year and mileage is your car? Does your privacy shelf make noises? How about around the center console are? Also, I never said the 1.8T was not reliable..Its all the other stuff connected to it that breaks (coils, tensioner, MAF, etc).

Default Repairs can be costly on any 6 year old car.

Be wary about getting a nice car just because it's cheap enough now that it's older. It may be just fine, but you can't tell by looking at it, you need to have more information. That information might best come from a local dealer that may have serviced that TT, or they might at least be willing to do an inspection on it for a reasonable labor charge. It can help with negotiating as well as steer you away from a troublesome car if you do this and have them run the VIN.

Also, where is it at in terms of life cycle of the brakes, other routine maintenance items, including and especially the timing belt/tensioner/water pump?

You want to have fun with this car after you get it (come back here for endless modifications to make the car more fun), you don't want to put a ton of money into maintenance repairs.

Good luck and have fun. The TT has some issues that you can read all about here, but it's far from an ordinary car in most respects, including most good ones. It's a car you'll love driving every day, including its cranky days. Get it checked though.
