Looking into buying an Audi TT
I just bought a 2000 TT 180hp non-quattro less than 6 months ago. I bought it at 59K miles. First thing I did was replace the Timing Belt and tensioner and waterpump. This cost me $700.
At this mileage the suspension was also shot. I spent $$720 for H&R springs and Koni shocks. I also replaced my strut moounts for like $40. Next item that needs to be done are the sway bar bushings (makes lots of noises). That will probably cost me $100-150. After that, I dont forsee spending much more money for the next 30-35K miles.
I have no complaints with the non-quattro (FWD). First of all, I live in SOCAL and dont need the Quattro for winter driving. I also dont have to worry about one more thing to maintain and break (the qauttro system). The 180HP engine is really fine for day to day street driving. It does lack the higher RPM power that the 225 HP offers. To sum it up, I dont regret the FWD 180HP I have. I plan to keep things stock aside from a dual exhaust in the future. Good luck.
if anyone else has anything to tell me besides the timing belt and gauge please let me know. I'm a college student and I will be paying for this car, so I want to know all the ins and outs. Thanks in advance.

Also, where is it at in terms of life cycle of the brakes, other routine maintenance items, including and especially the timing belt/tensioner/water pump?
You want to have fun with this car after you get it (come back here for endless modifications to make the car more fun), you don't want to put a ton of money into maintenance repairs.
Good luck and have fun. The TT has some issues that you can read all about here, but it's far from an ordinary car in most respects, including most good ones. It's a car you'll love driving every day, including its cranky days. Get it checked though.
