I'm experiencing grinding when shifting into 3rd gear. Any ideas guys?
Seriously, I do think that transmissions are a weak point for Audi, particularly if there cars have "sporting" aspirations as they do. And it's definitely been the same gear with my A4, S4, and now TT. They need to be beefed up. I don't want to hear that I need to shift my TT more gently and slowly, that's complete BS, even if it may be reality.
But, assuming your 2nd-3rd synchro isn't fried, that is the answer, along with some Redline MT90 synthetic tranny fluid. Do a change and you'll notice slipperier shifts. Not a miracle cure, but that along with the damned slower/careful shifting will definitely help the problem if it's not too far gone already?
BTW, is yours an '02 with 25-35k? That's when it seemed a majority of problems were surfacing. Dealers generally aren't anxious to help with this, and you'll likely be scolded / denied for abusing the car even if you're not. It couldn't **possibly** be Audi's fault, you know...

Of course a week later grind was back. Then after a couple of hundered miles it just disappeared.
Have now put about 7K miles on the car and it still seems OK.
Not sure why, but was hoping if it were to fail, it would still do it under warranty which ends this summer.
