Default My job is going to India..

I know this kind of OT, but I am just really frustrated at this whole "Global Outsourcing" deal. I have been in the IT for more than 13 years now and currently work for a Fortune 100 company. Now I am actually training people from India to do my job and providing "Knowledge Transfer".. basicall I am digging my own grave. I never thought that one day I would be unemployed with the skills I have, but unemployment could be a reality in a few months. I have two kids: 4-yrs old and an infant 10 months old. Currently live in Orange County. We will be screwed if I lose my job. Selling the TT that I just got may be possible. I may give up on the IT field and thinking about opening a franchise - LL BBQ is a prospect. I lived and enjoyed the golden days of IT in the 90's where I could pick my own job and name my own salary. Employers would try to recruit me and offer nice pay. Those days are gone and may never come back. I guess one has to accept that the world we live in is now a Global Economy and one has to adjust and re-educate themseleves to this reality.

Default don't worry dude...

every company that ends up outsourcing IT, especially application development, ends up restaffing their US location usually at a loss. International time differences and huge communication barriers make the outsourcing end up costing them more money. they aren't paying it in salaries, but it ends up taking more time, never getting completed, missing requirements, blowing deadlines, slow turnaround, and nobody understanding wtf they are doing because they have no experience with the company they are now doing IT work for.

I've kept a careful watch on this since it will directly impact my future as well. The thing you should really be worried about is the guest worker legislation that Bush is trying to get passed. That will allow those people to come work here in our actual locations and undercut our salaries big time. It's being pushed as imigrant workers coming to do the jobs we don't want to do, but it's not going to work that way. It's not legislation to help blue collar jobs, it's legislation to cut white collar salaries and save corporations huge amounts of money.

Default Pick up the latest issue of Money magazine. There is a good article about the very issue you have..

. And some good advice about how to plan your next career move. Start the plan now before the layoff comes.

And if you really do admire President Bush, send him a letter asking for help. Maybe he would consider nuking India in order to save your job for you...

Default Yep....my wife is in IT....she's an Oracle DBA and......

she used to (up until a month ago) work for a very large company, where at a town hall meeting with the CEO, was told that they are going to continue to outsource because they like the Indian people, they are smarter, and if you don't like it, you can leave.

So, that's exactly what she and droves of her co-workers did and are doing. Basically they are now in a bind because all of their good IT people got very fed up and left.

She is now much a happier Oracle DBA working for a smaller healthcare company where she is making more money and is actually appreciated.
