I hate to think about this but can't avoid the reality...
I need to get a bigger car for family(parents & kid) and I thought about suv. But i really don't want a Japanese suv (i guess i'm spoiled)

I've been looking at Tourage and honestly I like it's interior and some features listed on the website (i haven't got a chance to test drive it).

what do you guys think? is it a smart buy? any input would be appreciated!

Default Do you mean a Touareg? If so, then....

They are cool SUVs but I couldn't get over the price/mileage/usability factor. For such a huge vehicle, the back seat seems cramped. The V6 is anemic but the V8 only gets about 11mpg. The air suspension is better than springs but then you are in $50K territory and you could get a used Phaeton for that much and have a better car with more space unless you need the towing/hauling capacity.

It's received really good marks by motortrend, not sure about car and driver. Personally I haven't been in the market for one, but what I've read is very encouraging. Decent offroad ability, ample room, adequate handling. I'd definately go with the V-8.

Default Too large and too heavy...>>

RAV 4 is smaller and costs less and would be more reliable. Get a CPO 2005 model.

Default SUVs should all be set on fire.

the Touareg is no exception.

if you need room...get an Audi A4 Avant...you don't need to be elevated and heavy and sucking petrol out of every corner y'know?

Default If you're going to do something practical (for the family) then go all the way.

Get the best value and reliability. That means Japanese. So many good ones are available. The Touareg is such a fat pig. You get a 3 ton 5 seater. With gas at $4/gallon, that's nuts.

MORE IMPORTANTLY, you don't need an SUV unless/until you have 3 or more kids. What does a Touareg have that a sedan or avant doesn't have? It has no more room than a Passat or A6. Somehow, American culture has evolved to the point that everyone thinks they need an SUV as soon as they have a kid or a dog.

But once you hit that third kid stage your choices get unexciting, limited, and more expensive.

Default Why not keep the TT and add the Treg?

That's what I did. Keep the 2002 TT and just got the 2006 V8 Treg. It's got some awesome features, but like others have said be prepared to pay, pay, pay at the pump!
