Default Will he make it................?

After reading the forum for almost two years I want to pose a question concerning dependability issues of our TTs....I plan to do some LONG road trips this summer in my 02 225 quattro (40,000 miles, meticulously maintained). I live in North Carolina and, when school is out in May, my son will be treated to a "TT road trip" down through Florida, Daytona, Key West, etc. to celebrate getting his driver's license at age 16. (I expect him to do most of the driving!) It will be "Father-son bonding" and having general fun on the road...in August we will make the 3000 miles or so round trip drive to TT East. So, lots of long-legged drives. My question is, with so many reliablity issues that plague our cars, I am half afraid to take these trips. Should I fill the trunk with spare timing belts, a cluster, coil packs, an AC compressor, a dozen MAFs, well, you get the idea. Seriously, should I do any special preparations for these road runs? I am curious to know how many of us have actually had their cars "lay down on them" at all? My car has already left me stranded once (near my home) from a blown cluster and toased battery that happened all at once. OR,should I take these trips in my very reliable Cabrio and just have pictures of the TT glued on the dashboard?! I really would appreciate forum input on this. Thanks!

Default I've taken 3, 4000+ mile road trips in my car, 2 of which were above the mileage you're at now.

I've not been stranded yet *knock on anodized aluminum*. There's always a risk & there is usually a breakdown on every TT/East/West. But those are situations when people are driving fairly highly modified cars pretty hard. I think you'll be fine. If you want zero risk, leave tha Cabrio and TT @ home & take a Honda...though even those break down.

As for having "so many reliablity issues that plague our cars" keep in mind you only hear about problems on forums like this, and that between us all we have logged many millions of miles on these cars.

Default No problem IF you've maintained the car properly.

I routinely drive 6-8 hours for a crack at the tail of the Dragon, run around between 3K and 6.5K on the Dragon, and then back home. Car is as fun as sin ought to be!

Enjoy w/ your son. Great experience I did last year for TT-East w/ mine.

Default I wouldn't hesitate to ever drive my car 3000+ miles...

I'd pack a basic tool kit with the usual suspects: screwdrivers, torx, metric sockets, some zip ties, a few hose clamps and a roll of electrical/duct tape. Make sure my spare tire has air and all the tools I need to change it are in the trunk. Other then that sit back and enjoy the ride If your really concerned skip packing a timing belt - since your most likely won't want to change it on the side of the road and pack a MAF, coolant temp sensor, quart of oil, 1/2 gallon of G12, and a couple coil packs. But seriously I don't think you'll have a problem.

Uhh...if he needs a timing belt kit on the road, he will need a LOT more than a timing belt kit. :^P

Default Well, if you want security, then flip the bill to get it checked out (if you gotta flip it).........

All I can elaborate on from my limited library of knowledge of this car is on the timing belt - It won't help to bring a ton of timing belts because the timing belt problem actually stems from leaky oil, and is not really the belt's fault. And plus, if your belt breaks on a trip, having extras is not going to help you at all.

So my best advice is to have a REAL pro look at it and say what you would need to do.

Good luck, it sounds like a really fun trip!
