But FYI--I swapped the shocks with the stock ones to test, and the noise persists

Default mine disappeared after i swapped shocks.

the only think I can think of, is that the upper rear suspension head of the shock had some 'play'

Could you do me a favor and try to place a rubber washer in with the upper bolt or the head?

I am loathe to test fate and get that horrible noise again.

The reason I asked: I was wondering if there would be some similarity in equipment that we could point to.

Default they'll make a clunk if the lower shock bolt isn't torqued down enough...

when the threads on mine were screwed up the bolt backed out enough to aloow the shock to move and clunk.

Default i am thinking that this is the prob that a lot of folk have.

my lower bolts were golden. I torqued them to and above spec, but still had the noise.
I torqued the upper bolts but had no success eliminating the noise.

however, i just replaced the shocks, and so far *knock on wood* no noise. My guess is that the upper bolt/head is finally tight enough to not shift, or the bilsteins that got have a wider head than the konis did.
I wanted to measure them, but w/o a micrometer, i could not get anything accurate.

I am hoping that someone will test my guess.

Sure--what do you mean exactly?

I replaced the upper bolt, too--didn't seem to help.
