Default Question about Big Brakes.

What do they do? Sounds like a dumb question, but I know they keep brake fade away, but what about like stopping distance, etc.. aren't the brakes going to lock up before you notice any stoping distance change? I really don't know, thats why I'm asking.

Default They're big :)

Lots of benefits... fade resistance, better pedal feel, more consistent pedal feel, easier to modulate, shorter stopping distances, easier to swap pads, possibly lighter than stock, they look cool

Default Larger thermal mass. Brakes stop the tires that stop the car. They do this ..

by transferring vehicle energy into heat partially. So having a larger caliper that can heat up and cool off faster is helpful, as well as, having larger rotors that can heat up and cool off faster to disapate the heat.

I'd also recommend stainless brake lines to prevent buldging when you pressurize the brake line. This will also lead to better peddal feel and less sponginess.

Finally all this is worthless if you have 2 year old OEM dot 3 brake fluid as it will just boil and fade the brakes.

Ironically a BBK will NOT necessarily shorten your stopping distance. However, after braking heavily on the track for 4 lapse it will disapate heat faster than smaller brakes thus giving you less fade and corresponding stopping distances. (IE: brakes failing because of too much heat or failing brake fluid).

Clear as mud?

Default Ooops forgot. Contact Jeremy at Matrix Integrated for an article that goes into detail about this .

They did a brake seminar a few months ago. They have a document that describes "why BBK" much better than I.

Default a waste of money unless your going to the track >>

Your car weighs nearly 3k pounds, Maybe 200 horsepower and you probably don't drive 100mph everywhere you go. your car has ABS which wont allow the brakes to lock up. Plain zimmerman rotors and a good set of pads are all you need.
