Default Oil Consumption

I have a 1999 225TT (89,000km on the clock) which is consuming vast amounts of oil. I need almost a litre every 600km. The audi garage could not figure it out. I have already changed valve seals with very little improovement and now I am told its the turbo charger. Does anyone have any ideas before I continue spedning?

Default With that much oil loss, I would think if the turbo is at fault...

you would have a good amount of oil collected in the right side intercooler. I think the easiest thing might be to check the charge pipe first since it's at the top. It's supposed to be normal to see a small amount of oil in there, like a thin coat of oil when you touch inside of the pipe with your finger. But if you see a puddle of oil, or if oil drips out of the pipe, the turbo is probably the problem. Checking the right side intercooler is probably a better indicator, but more involving. I don't remember if it's installed at an angle where oil will pour out of the lower hose when it's disconnected or if you have to remove the intercooler and tilt it to pour out any oil. If you have to remove the intercooler to check this, you have to remove the bumper and headlight.

My turbo died a couple of weeks ago. I'm still waiting for the replacement. When I removed the intercoolers (I'm replacing them with a FMIC), oil poured out of the right side intercooler... and the left side, but not as much.

In the U.S., I was quoted $2500 parts & labor for turbo replacement. But that didn't include some of the recommended stuff, like new oil feed & return lines. You'll also need alignment because the subframe needs to be dropped or removed. You should should also have all the turbo gaskets replaced along with new seals for oil and coolant lines to the turbo. If you feel inclined to do it yourself, I've been quoted $350-$400 to rebuild a turbo. (Yours sounds like a rebuild candidate.) If it can't be rebuilt, a remanufactured turbo from the dealer is $1200. 3rd party is $850.

As I'm doing mine myself along with a clutch job, I realize it's so much easier to get to the turbo with the trasnmission removed and both jobs require removal of much of the same parts. So, you may also want to consider a clutch replacement if you're doing it yourself or if the shop you'll be using will give you a good discount for doing both.

Good luck.

Default Might be as simple as a bad PCV system...>

This is actually pretty common and responsible for a lot of oil consumption on these cars. Check for a lot of oil in the lines to the intake hose where they attach, and think about replacing your PCV valve..
