scheduled service light
"Service!" notice comes on when I start the car. The notice has been counting down from 800 miles or so. It's been about 10,000 miles since I bought it, and I've done two oil changes myself since then.
Is this just an oil change light? Do I need to get a VAG-COM to turn it off?
With 48,570 miles I should probably take it in and have them replace the timing belt and water pump anyhow, huh? Anything else I should have done? I haven't had to take it in for service since I bought it in August '05. (knock on wood).

you can turn if off w/o any tools...>
the procedure is in the owner's manual (in the instruments and controls section). I just did it last weekend.
I think you turn on the ignition while pressing in the right instrument cluster button... keep it pressed while then pressing the left cluster button until the service reminder resets to 10,000mi. Better check the manual to make sure, though.
BTW, it defaults to 10,000mi, but if you really need to change your oil at 5k intervals you might want to reset the interval, and for that you'd need a Vag-com or ProDiag.

Yes, you can shut if off without any special tools...
Double check your manual but I believe its just as 'jhoeppel' says:
Turn car off.
Hold right button below screen while turning key to on position.
Then press the left button below screen until it resets.
Turn car off.
Hold right button below screen while turning key to on position.
Then press the left button below screen until it resets.
