HOLY CRAP. So today started out normal. Took some pics of some other car parts that I'm trying to sell from another car. Went into town to browse for a coffee table for my new dorm room. So I'm at the last furniture place and it's kinda on a hill. I park, get my camera and procceed to walk to the door. POP, I hear, like the sound of someone closing their door. I turn and see that no new cars are in the parking lot. At the same time, I realize that my car is rolling backwards toward the street. OH ****. I run to my car (Nikon D70s around my shoulder.) first thing i try is to open the door. Locked. ****. I then try to grab the door(windows were down) to try to stop the car. STUPID. So by now i'm out in a 5 lane street. I think about jumping through the window and realize that that would be stupid. I whip my keys out. Unlock the doors, Swing the door open and jump in (all taking place in about 2 lanes of movement) as soon as I'm in the car I STAND, I repeat STAND on the brake with both feet and the car comes to a stop halfway in the driveway of another business across the street and 7 feet away from a car in that driveway. I look down and notice that the button is off of the ebrake, start the car and back the car out of the street. Damn. I got lucky. The only thing that happened is that I left a small ding on the front of the door where I think that I hit it with the camera. I consider myself lucky. It was a busy part of town too. But the car and I were unscathed. From now on I will leave my car in gear.

 

I can honestly say I have never parked my car out of gear relying just on the parking brake. And I didn't realize others did this. Glad it wasn't an expensive lesson.

I like how your car is coming along. It's pretty sweet.

 

That way if something does let go the curb will stop it from getting much worse. Glad to hear you saved it.

That's odd, every car I've had with manual I've left in gear when parked...

 

Glad you're both OK. Picturing the scene in my head is kind of funny though. :-P
