Default Changed the oil today . . .

in my Honda Fit. Not a drop got on me, nor on the garage floor or on any parts of the car. And it only took 10 minutes! (I still love the TT though even though changing the oil is a major mess involving cussing, blood, and pain.)

Default I don't think it was Audi, I think it was VW

I was looking at the engine on a friend's 1981 Rabbit and it's basically the same architecture, filter is in a similar spot. I think the crappy location was inherited and made worse by the tight packaging on the TT. Regardless, it still sucks. And if you think the filter is bad just wait til you have to replace the engine speed sensor

Default Also helped while Dan changed oil in his new GTI,

now that was different. 2.0 engine . . . It has a filter media inside a housing - to drain the oil out of the housing, it has a valve stopper thing that you screw a beer bong tube (an $80 part) into and about 3/4 quart drains from there. Then, the housing comes off with a 36mm socket. Replace the filter media, and put it all back together. Weird!

that's correct. Every 1.8L engine in the VAG line-up has the filter located there.
