Fuel gauge showed 0 / flat when I know I had a half tank of fuel

Fuel gauge showed 0 / flat when I know I had a half tank of fuel
I was at the track this weekend and when I was driving from my spot to the grid, I noticed that my fuel gauge was showing below empty; it looked like it had no input. I got out and wiggled the wires in the back where the spare tire goes (removed for the track) and nothing changed.
I knew that I still had a half tank left so I figured I would go out on the track anyways. A few minutes later, I glanced down to see how it was doing, and it was back to normal.
Is this signs of a cluster going out or more likely just a bad connection from the fuel sensor? I do not think the cluster has ever been replaced on this car.

Thanks, I'll definitely run the concentrate to fix this problem, but...
I am wondering if running Chevron fuel that has the low concentration of Techron will help the long term life of the fuel system?
