I have done 2 trips across the states in my car without a problem....
That said..it was when the car had a lot less mods on it....not that it is not reliable now...i am just more aware of it...
I would not worry...just check it out before you go...you should be fine..IMO
"On a hot pass up the Greensprings Grade yesterday my engine dropped a cylinder...
it was completely gone...
It was a LONG 25 mile chug home on three!! <I had the spares, but I'd unloaded my tools after returning from Montana, heh! I was gonna be "close to home" for the next few weeks>
Motoring slowly back to the shop on three cylinders allowed ample time to consider the possibilities.
No CEL... huh? Once the VagCom was hooked up, no codes at all!
I pulled the pacs and plugs... they all looked good, but #1 pac smelled burned.
With a dead cylinder, that plug SHOULD look a little loaded up after 20-25
miles...
but , they all looked good?
There were no clanks or knocks, but it could still be a burned valve or a broken piston or ring...
A compression check showed 165 to 170 PSI on all cylinders... whew!!! Prolly not a broken engine.
I installed all four pacs from my "known good" set with 7k miles and a set of new NGK copper core OEM's (I bought out Schwing's stash at his garage sale to use in the Passat and A6)...
Smooth!!!
note to self: add a set of plugs to the kit, it might save taking the thing apart twice or more, beside the road. With a dead cylinder and no codes, how do you know? Just change out all the fricken parts!"
Or, get a Honda :-)
