Default Can't find "steering" clunks - driving me bonkers! >>

I replaced my strut bushings and bearings but still get a clunk when turning...more of a pop.

I see some grease on the passenger side outer CV joint...and then tonight heard a clunk that increased in speed but sounded more "centered".

Obviously I should look into the CV...but anything else while it's apart?

Buy the whole axle or just the joint? Where??

Default way easier to buy the whole unit assembled- I did just a joint, kinda a PITA

But it can be done, had to call OldSchool Audi twice, cause I was nervous taking the hub off the car- need some SERIOUS leverage to break that nut off. From what i remember the inner CV is much easier. Good luck!

Default however....

when you buy the whole unit assembled it's "rebuilt." Like Forrest Gump said, you never know what you're gonna get.

I prefer to replace only the offending joint with a new one. That is, if the CV is actually his issue.

Default About 84K miles - >>

I had planned on doin the tie rod ends, the boots are shot, but unlikely to cause the sounds...

Unless someone here could tell otherwise

Default Cheapest rebuilts were ebay specials $165...

with a $45 core...and I found some new joints for about that same price.

I have done CV joints before, and dozens of hubs/bearings on other cars...not too afraid of it, but it's tempting to try the rebuilt.

DO they truly cause a loud intermittent clunk sound???

Sometimes, on extreme full lock turns in parking lots, theres a noise that sounds like a spring...as if the coil is turning on its mount... ???

Default Get the tire up in the air.....

shake stub vertically: clunks = ball joints.
shake stub horizontally: clunks = tie rods.

Hope this is a pipe dream on my part.
