need suggestions for OBX trip

My wife and I are planning on driving up for a 3 day weekend next week. Neither of us have ever been there before. Do any of you have suggestions for where to stay and what to do or see?

I think it's right next to all the sand. >>>

The Hatteras island lighthouse is something to see.

I have a few touristy websites saved that I can send you as I just planned a short trip down there.
