Audi TT at high rate of speed slammed into the rear of an SUV. Driver was arrested for DUI, Vehicular Assault and Hit-and-Run. Troopers say he has a criminal history and is a repeat-DUI offender. (Couple in SUV injured, but OK)

"You don't find that very often but sometimes when there's a lot of damage to the front-end of the vehicle and the speedometer cable is damaged, it sticks to the speed that it was at the time of the collision," said Trooper Jeff Merrill, WSP.
The speedometer got stuck reading 110 miles per hour.

More likely... the impact caused the needle to move. The car would be even more damaged at 110 mph than the picture shows. Or even a 60 mph delta.
I know that most cars where this is a sudden impact the speedo will stay at where ever it was when the impact occured
