Orange Haldex Tips - '01 225TTR
I have a couple tips from my Orange Haldex install.
I worked from Mike and Steve's photo sets:

and

A couple things seem to be different about my car. Maybe it was the year, maybe that it is a roadster. I don't know. But it might be useful for folks to know.
1. The clip on the back of the differential that holds one of the electrical connectors was different from the instructions. Where the instructions (and both photo sets) show the mounting clip with the two bolts aligned on a horizontal axis, my car has them on a vertical axis. This makes it much harder to remove them, and would have made the top one nearly impossible to reinstall, as the clip and the connector were both in the way. Rather than remove the muffler to get more room to work, I put a cutting wheel on my Dremmel and cut of about a quarter inch from the forward edge of the bottom of the clip (if you have a clip like this it should be obvious, if not, write me). This gave me a nice gap through which I could slip my wrench. It still wasn't easy, but it probably saved me a very frustrating half hour or more.
2. In the photo sets, it seems there were clips holding the cable in place as it runs over the differential. On mine there were no clips (except the two on the rear of the diff). So I tied a long piece of thin line to the cable and pulled it through when I removed the controller. Then I tied the line to the new cable and pulled it back through. It made running the cable really easy.
3. I have a mirror on a telescoping rod, which I used to get a look at the territory around the controller. It saved a lot of fumbling around blind, though there was still a lot of fumbling anyway.
4. I didn't think to put a drip tray down before I started. Some oil leaked out for me, so it would have been a good idea to have it there from the start.
5. Mike and Steve removed a lot more of the surrounding stuff than I did. The job would have been a lot less frustrating if I had followed their examples. On the other hand, since I don't have a lift and didn't have a lot of time, my way may have been quicker overall.
6. Having smaller hands would have been a big help. So if you have a buddy with small hands, it would be worth a six pack.
I think that's all I've got. I took some pictures, but I don't think any of them would help much. Let me know if you would like to see.
Thanks to Mike and Steve (and everyone else) for all the help.
Take care!
- Charlie
