Default 34k miles...too soon to do timing belt/water pump?

im gonna have the head off soon to have rods installed. should i go ahead and buy a timing belt kit, and have it done at the same time? or would it be a waste of money?

i was thinking i might as well get it out of the way and get quality stuff instead of waiting till 60k and doing it. what say you?

If it was my car I'd do it - You've already got the timing belt off anyways

Why not you'll have another 60k of trouble free riding

Default How old?

If the head is off, so is the timing belt, so minimal labor to replace it.

Having said that, I think most failures are actually due to the pneumatic tensioner losing pressure and letting the belt skip. Such a failure may be expected to be more time than mileage related.

I'd have it replaced, since it would be mostly parts costs.

Default out of curiosity- do we know of an instance of a failure pre-50k-

..i.e. an instance where time was a factor...any of those who have changed on the time-scale...any signs of tensioner failure, etc?

Three different Audi dealer service managers told me to wait for the recommended mileage.

Default I can't comment on a pre-50k, but I've read a recent one on a 52k - he

was only doing 10mph at the time too. It's gonna cost him a new engine !

AK_TTuner : for the price of the belt and the water pump, you might as well do it while everything is uncovered. It's the labor charge that bumps everything up. ;-)
