Belt broke: Update
I have started to tear down the car. The belt broke, well it didn't break, the crank actually just ripped the teeth off of a six inch section of it. Does the belt usually break that way or does it snap in half?

That's my suspicion...
but I haven't seen it confirmed.
mosmoe, please check out they pneumatic tensioner when you get it rebuilt. I suspect it won't have much pressure left.
If it doesn't hold tension, the belt can skip a tooth or two, valves collide, the cam stops but the crank keeps going, teeth get ripped off the belt, and you have a major expense.
