can a n00b do the 40k mile tuneup?
i'm trying to find a first project with my TT so i can start learning the car (and cars in general outside autoblog knowledge).
i know i'll probably have a local shop put in my dieselgeek, but when i mentioned the 40k tune-up in a previous post, a few said that i could save money doing it myself.
can you guys provide a checklist, parts and where to buy. i'd also appreciate tool recommendations.
should i get a bentley manual?

Yup. That's where I went first before posting...
Was just curious if the gearheads had any advice for an admirer who is a little gun shy.
I just got my first house and wanted to know what set of tools to get.
Outside of the basic tool set, what particular pieces do you recommend?

Buy a good basic set from Sears..>>
$200-300 oughta cover most of the initial bases. You'll need some specialized tools...Torx wrenches, Torque wrench, Haldex wrench (I can help with that one). Consider tools an investment, not an expense and start collecting now for a lifetime..Everytime you have to do something, buy the tool rather than pay the labor to have it done. I'm still using tools I bought 35 years ago and still saving money as a result.
Also pick up the Bentley service manual (Amazon has the best price)

Where are you located? Maybe a local TT owner could walk you though it.
It's not tough. IIRC, 40K service is oil/filter change, Haldex fluid/filter change, spark plug change, air filter change, cabin filter change, and a general look-over of the car. Lube your door hinges. That's about it.
ECS has just about everything you would need. The only special tool is a Haldex filter wrench. Maybe a spark plug-gapper and plug socket, if you want to call those "special."

We could probably help you out
There is a handful of us in the Wheaton/Glenn Ellyn area. If you wanted to drive up this way we could probably get you taken care of. Shouldn't take more than 2 hours to do everything for the 40K. I've done it twice myself on my TT.
