Just got CS2, CS3 is the latest release
I was able to score a new, still shrinkwrapped, full version (not OEM or educational) on ebay for about $260. Check the sellers carefully tho. I bought from a guy who had a couple copies and other software for sale and lots of positive feedback.

just about every variant of photoshop...but depending upon what you need, most variants
will do just about everything you need.
although if you have an intel Mac, you should upgrade to CS3, which makes use of the core Duo, whereas CS2 didn't. a noticeable gain in speed.

As long as I have have adjustment layers,
curves, levels, hue/saturation, a decent clone tool and a few other basics I can do anything in any version. The healing clone tool has saved me plenty of time though.
