Default ouch. sounds like more than "boom". sounds like "boom sha locka locka boom."

or perhaps that's after the water heater is fixed.
Here's to warm water...

Default Crusty old off valve leading to the water heater will not shut down completely...

Thus, if I want to have *any* water in the house (i.e. for flushing or whatnot), I have to have water leaking all over the basement.

Grr.

Default I'd be happy to settle for just running water for a while.

But as we don't even have that due to this, grr... Just grr.

Default Well at least you can be thankful it's in the basement. :-)

Must be an epidmic. I had $450 bill from plumber at my lakehouse this week for a couple of small leaks and replacement of a "crusty old valve" that wouldn't shut off. I swear they charge Audi service rates. Bad part is I could have fixed it if I had just taken the time. Expensive to be lazy.

Default Yeah, also on the bright side, I was 20' away when it popped, so I was able to shut it off...

... fairly quickly.

Although, I was pretty baffled as to what had just made the loud 'boom' until I heard water running. D'oh.

Well, now I know what *that* sounds like!

I'm going to DIY it with a buddy. He actually has experience with such things...

I really don't trust myself to sweat pipe.

I have a feeling I'd be spending a lot more money in the long-run if I attempted it solo!
