Found this plug laying on the floor inside my garage. I found where it goes but i'm not sure exactly what it is for? Also, what fluids does it keep inside? I think it could possibly be the gearbox? HELP please!!!!

Default not critical I've heard

just plugs a hole on the top of the crankcase (I think that's the term)

If you look just to the left of your battery and down next to the shifting cables, you should see a hole and the gearing behind it. I've heard it's not particular important if you lose that piece, but that's where it will go back.

Default Plug for the inspection port..>>>

On the trans. Not critical. Look straight down to the transmission and right where the Engine meets the block you'll see a hole and flywheel teeth visible. Pop the plug back in...

Default Any idea what the fluid is then?

I found where the open spot was and clearly saw the gearing/teeth on the flywheel. I wiggled my hand down through and popped the plug back in. While it was out, some sort of fluid was sprayed out and is on the underside of the engine cover and surrounding areas. Any idea what this is? Just engine oil or transmission fluid? Thanks for very quick reply!!

Default I found mine laying on the top of the trans yesterday... Related question! >>

The inspection hole is right above the crankcase ventilation plumbing which tends to leak and get gunky as the miles pile on. Wonder what happens if that oily crap drips down into the inspection hole? Could that cause oil contamination of the clutch disc or pressure plate? (I have a specific reason for asking...)

Default That's a dry cavity...There shouldn't be fluid there but...>

if there is, it could be:

1) engine oil from a bad rear seal
2) Transmission oil from a bad front seal
3) Brake fluid from a leaking slave cylinder

You need to determine what it is....Repairs for any of the above is pretty expensive as it requires trans removal (and you might as wel put a new clutch in while doing this)

Default Probably oily blow-by from the PCV system tubing which sits above that hole

My wife's Passat has a 1.8t with a leaky/gunky PCV system which I'm now replacing (what a PITA). Anyway, I'm wondering if oil drips from this PCV system have dribbled down into her trans' inspection port (plug missing) and led to some slight oil contamination of the pressure plate or clutch disc. There's a slight shudder on 1st launch now... never was before.

Default Remote chance..>>

it would take a lot of fluid! Most clutch contamination is caused by a leaking slave cylinder..

Default sounds like a possibility

There is a fair amount of sludge/gunk built up in the area. I quickly found out when I pulled my hand out from replacing the plug. I'm going to clean up the area the best I can and check to see if there are any new leaks at all that may develop. I expect the buildup as the car has around 90K on it now.
