disconnecting MAF turns ESP light on?

I disconnected the MAF this morning, wanting to see how that would effect my fuel trim numbers, and was surprised to see the ESP (traction control) warning in the cluster light up. How are these systems connected? I can't figure out why the MAF would have any influence on the ESP light at all... common ground maybe?

So I reconnected the MAF, the ESP light turned off and I drove to work. Unfortunately, now my ProDiag won't connect to the ECU so I've no idea what the hell is happening. D'oh!

Any ideas?

Yes ESP needs the maf for some reason to function

Air Flow is proportional to power. A comparator circuit uses this and compares it to wheel speed...

and other variables, and VOILA!
