Car choices..Mazdaspeed 3 vs. GTI
TT will be handed over to a relative soon (soon as I fix some things). I was looking at a new WRX hatch previously and after driving seeing the price of the MS3, its just hands-down beat the WRX in most everything. Seriously, you just cant beat the price of the MS3 for what you get with it. With the new GTI, I hear nothing but good stuff about its performance and handling. But the price is a little up there when you start equipping it with similar stuff on the MS3. Especially considering the 63Hp diff between the two cars. Also the styling of the GTI is someting I still cant get used to, it just doesnt grow on me for some reason (too high, stubby, etc). I am also not sure about reliability of the VW, Im sure its ok for the first few years but who knows down the road? While I want to own a German car again, its hard to overlook the MS3. Its that good of a car.

18 months of unadulterated GTI joy and reliablity here...
personally I love the way it looks and thing the mazda is pretty ugly. Don't know or care what the Mazda costs, but $500 over invoice (little worse on a new 08, better on a leftover 07) is typical pricing for a new GTI, fyi. There are at least 3 others here on the forum with them, I think, and I've heard nothing but good reviews from them, and most owners on the Vortex don't seem to be reporting as many chronic common problems as there were with the A4 GTIs...still some diverter and PCV valve failures, but that is about it.

i have never considered Mazda a vehicle of durability....I think it is almost disposable...probably not fare...
The GTI chipped will torch a Mazda Speed 3...and a stock GTI will get around a track as fast a Speed 3. Lots of torque steer on the Mazda...

I had a Mazda 3 hatch for a week while my S4 was in the shop
I have to say, I liked it a lot. It needed more power, a stiffer suspension, and a manual tranny... all of which the MS3 offers.
I still like the fit and finish of the GTI better, but the Mazda is no slouch (I even had DVD navi in the Mazda!)
I'd still probably pick the GTI because I think it looks better and there's likely more aftermarket support for the 2.0TFSI (and MKIV platform as a whole).

Mazda is a used car... even out of the factory >>
My old roommate used to poke fun at Mazda that you can only buy used Mazda cars and that the Mazada stopped making new cars and instead made used cars out of the factory (hahaha...)
This is ofcourse based on the observation that nobody bought Mazdas new between the period when protege et al. were phased out and 3s and 6s were brought out, i think...
