Default TT power steering

Hello all,

I am considering trading my A6Q C5 for a TT (MK1) (yeah, it's middle age crisis time!). I drove one yesterday and I really liked the way it handles, and yet is pretty smooth on the highway. A couple of questions for you experts before I "commit":

- The power steering seemed pretty hard compared to my A6. I know I know, it's a sports car, but it was a bit surprising. Is the steering way harder than the A6? I read the tt has the same speed-sensitive servo assist system than my A6 so I didn't expect them to be so different.

- Although the car is very quiet, I noticed a very mild vibration-buzzing even at low speed. It seemed to me that it came from the tranny, but it wasn't very loud. Is this normal?

- Finally, do you know if the warranty is void if you install a hitch to carry bikes and skis? The car has 38K miles, and an extended warranty of 40K.

Thanks a lot guys, and I will definitively post pics of the new baby if/when I get it!

Default we're assuming the TT is a quattro

the PS should not be "hard" as compared to the A6...low tire pressure may cause that, low fluid...I'm assuming those two items are in order so it must be elsewhere.....

Give the quattro a real spin...test drive it again and if you feel the steering wheel bind, it may be faulty haldex. just to be sure...ask and see if it has service records for the haldex and such. At 38k it has only had one haldex service and due at 40k...see if they'll do the haldex before they deliver it to you.

Default Yep, a Quattro coupe 225

Thanks for the tips Horsche. I will ask for those records. The tire pressure seemed visually fine, I didn't check the fluid level though. What else could be causing this? I guess I am not too worried since the car is still under warranty, but I certainly don't want to buy somebody else's trouble!

Any comments on the noise? And the trailer hitch?

Thanks again guys!

Default Bikes and skis -- HACK THS is selling his factory rack on eBay -- look up a few posts

I have this same rack and it is fabulous. I leave it on the car year-round, carry two bikes with the fork-mount trays or skis/snowboards with the ski attachment.

Default Well, I have a rack in my A6 but I don't really like it that much....

since it is a bit noisy, that's why I was thinking on a hitch instead. Plus, I have a really sweet bike (Gary Fisher Cake dlx-1)...but, it has a "special" hub (thanks to Maverick!) that won't fit in a regular roof rack!

Thanks for the tip though!

Default since you are buying the TT at 38k

see if you can get them to change out the haldex fluid and filter which is due at 40k anyway...either that or asked them for a "due" bill for the service when you reach 40k...and this way they'll do it at no charge...this is of course if this TT is no longer covered under the free scheduled maintenance program....On the vibration/buzzing issue, this could be related to the haldex....or it could be just tire/wheel out of round...hard to say..but start at the wheels and see if any deformation is present and then get that haldex (TT quattro) looked at...
Also, I have heard that vibration can be transmitted into the cabin via the gear linkage after some folks have opted for the dogbone poly bushing...
I have no comment on the hitch....Good luck

Default Thanks again Horsche. It seems that...

both things are not normal; hence I don't think I'll be buying somebody else's problems! The tires have less than 5K miles so I wouldn't think that's the source of the problem. I will ask the guy to do the Haldex service and see what happens. The steering is still an issue. So in conclusion, I am glad I asked this question, I will keep driving other TTs until I find one I really like.

Thanks guys, I will let you know what I get!

G

PS: If anybody else can give me some hints about the hitch it would be great.

Default NP.....one thing i asked Jose at Eurotech

motors (an Audi master mechanic) about the difference between TT and A6 power steering and he says the A6 has servo tronix assisted power steering which makes the A6 feel less involved with respect to steering and the TT does not have this....he also said you can disconnect this to make it feel more tactile.....maybe this is what you felt.....but the viration stuff is hard to pinpoint.....

Default I have been on this forum for six years

and do not recall ever seeing anyone with a hitch installed a TT. (Not saying it can't be done, but just have never seen it.)

Default You can get a bike carrier from Thule that keeps the wheels on the bike

Many people don't like the fork mount style. Although if you are a cyclist I assume you have seen these before.
