Default Audi tech says this noise is normal..

I posted a few weeks ago about a whining sound that lasts about 60 seconds when I first start the car up then goes away. I brought it to the dealer to check it out for me, and they said the car is running to Audi specifications, and that the noise is normal. I argued that it can't be normal since I just started hearing this noise a month ago, so something must be up.

He said maybe some water got into the secondary air pump, but isn't worth it to replace the part since it'll cost around $1100 and is not in need of replacing. Should I be worried about this? I'm not mechanically inclined to take it apart myself.

Default don't worry about it. mine does it in the cold

emmissions thing. sounds terrible for a minute then goes away, absolutely not worth replacing unless you've got an extra 1100 sitting around to pay for it...

Default yep, mine did it too

eventually the racket got so bad that I did replace the pump. $1100 is crazy though, the pump is $249.95 at ECS Tuning. Maybe try an indie...

Default you can actually fix it for almost nothing

because the noise is caused by popping rivets in the case, which, if you replace with screws (next to nothing at home depot) solves the issue. only problem is, getting at the damn pump involves about 4 hours of labor (if you have tools/patience) and more beer than anyone should drink in an afternoon.

i'll wait till i can't take it anymore

Default my pump was intact, none of the rivets had popped...

apparently there's two flavors: burned motor bearings with the rivets intact... and mis-aligned bearings from loose rivets.

Removing the pump was pretty easy, but replacing it was a b*tch! I modded the mounting bracket a bit for ease of "re-entry"... bottom line: I agree, waiting till it's LOUD is good

Maybe not if the actual emissions are still in spec.
