Default timing belt DIY or pay for it...?

after reading all this "change your timing belt!" messages, i think i should do mine (2002 w/ 75K miles). I'm fairly competent with engines (i've pulled a couple out, currently rebuilding one ('57, no timing belt), etc, but i've never worked with a timing belt.

the FAQ made it sound do-able. is it harder than it sounds? did people run into a lot of complications?

Default it's not that bad.

the hardest part is getting everything back together. it helps to have someone else's hands there with you.

If you rebuild an engine you have the know how. You will need an extra set of hands

Default there are several good write ups on the process.

Use the search or google. I'd give you the links but I'm too lazy to search them out.

Default if you've pulled an engine you can change it

i've never pulled an engine and i changed mine.

1. collect and print all the how-to's on the forum. there are 4-5 of them.

2. get a shop manual

3. get a timing belt kit from dieselgeek.com or other vender

4. have a buddy on standby if you need another set of hands

5. congratulate yourself on saving lots of money!

for me it was an entire weekend project. but i went quite slow.

Default You can do it. You only need a helper when trying to get new belt over pulleys.

Everything else is LOTS of steps taking things off and putting them back. Pretty straight forward though. The only crucial step is to mark old belt, cam sprocket and crank gear with paint or white-out. Transfer the marks from old belt to new one. Tie-wrap the new belt to the cam sprocket so it does not jump a tooth. Liberal use of the French language while sliding new belt over gears is the secret to success.

Good luck, bro.
