Default Temp Sensor...Thermostat...Cluster...Other?

My coolant temp gauge has recently been fluctuating from dead center to one click left. I did some research on the forums here and have seen varying advice.

I drove 30 minutes monitoring blocks 49 and 51 from the HVAC unit. Block 49 never got above 82 but block 51 remained constant at 90. Whenever the gauge dropped one click left, block 49 measured a few deg under 80. Ambient temp was 31 deg F.

At idle, the rpm needle sometimes bounces. And I've had some jerkiness under hard acceleration that I've been think was a MAF going bad. But research points towards temp sensor for this? But the fluctuating temp points towards thermostat stuck open? But the difference in blocks 49 and 51 may indicate bad cluster?

Car is chipped...APR 93...and I have 57k miles. Still under CPO warranty for a few more months. My $50 deductible would be more than the thermostat if I try to do myself, so I'll probably have the dealer perform the work. But I always like to go in with a strategy since they usually don't have one.

What do you think?

49 is actual, 51 is smoothed ...Rely on 49. Sounds like a thermostat..

Default I saw how 51 was smoothed, but how can a smoothed signal be biased +8 deg?

I figure smoothed is an average, so to get a reading of 90, wouldn't the actual have to oscillate around 90?

Thanks in advance Steve.

Yep, t-stat. Let me be the third who agrees. Block 49 tells the tale.

Default Just went through a similar thing...

It was the t-stat. Block 49 was ranging from 72-86. Had it replaced and all's well again.

Default Thanks, I lost my link to it somehow. Looks like fun.

I am sure I will be dropping that little screw down below at least once.
