Any tricks to confirm bad strut bearings?
I'm going in for a new t-stat under CPO warranty, so since I'll be paying the deductible, I have a few other items I wanted them to look at.
The last three times I've taken it in I ask to have the strut bearings checked/replaced because i think they are crushed due to the gap test mentioned elsewhere on the forum (the gap is not huge but more than Steve and others state about when they go bad). And each time they do nothing about the strut bearing and replace some other suspension part...stabilizer links last time.
My CPO runs out soon and want to get this fixed if there really is a problem. Besides the gap check, how else can I confirm a crushed bearing? My symptoms are a knocking felt in steering wheel while turning and rolling over uneven surface.

This pic might help.
Mine are bad in this picture. You can tell by the distance between the black plastic strut caps and the strut bar. If the distance is more than say a centimeter or so, you are likely in need of new strut bearings.

Re: You are correct. Audi has some improved ones now.
You got me worried...I bought the rubber bushings and bearing from ECS. Is the new Audi part the bearings or the rubber bushings? I'm about to do the front struts and bushings/bearings next week. Doh....
