Chunk of metal bolted to the Left (drivers) side of the rear bumper?

Chunk of metal bolted to the Left (drivers) side of the rear bumper?
Anyone who has had there rear bumper off know what the rather large looking chunk of metal is that is bolted to the drivers side on the rear bumper just inside of the bumper cover? There isn't one on the passenger side. The car is a '01 TT roadster. Seems like it could go? I also need to replace the factory battery with an Oddysey PC925MJT for a weight savings 11lbs. Thanks, MGH

that's the (in)famous "Mass Damper" that controls ambient vibrations that focus on that location. Sure you can pull it, with the obvious implication that you might have a bit more resonance, and of course it's well aft so there is some additional moment you'll be sacrificing.

Can't hurt, right? Bwaha. Personally I'd shoot for 70/30.
This way you'll be able to put more in the trunk when traveling, the rear tires won't wear hardly at all, and you'll Have lots of front traction for drag racing ricers...
I'm sure Audi just had some Pig iron they needed to smuggle out of Hungary and this seemed a conventient way to do it..

I pulled mine at the same time I installed a DEKA 14 battery (the 11# one). So I dropped 30# up
front and 37# in the rear. I have not noticed any effect on the street, but on the track the car was noticeably quicker to bring the rear end around. I set my hot pressures to 41 front and 37 rear and that cured that problem.
I'll be installing a trailer hitch soon so that will make up a bit for the lost tail weight.

It's there to tune out a potentially dangerous suspension oscillation.
At speed, and under the right conditions, if the rear suspension was upset, it could result in an uncontrollable oscillation. This was something beyond the ability of the rear wing and its added down force to deal with.
The weight is there to "tune out" the oscillation.

There are safer ways of losing that weight...
If 20 pounds means that much to you, remove the following:
Stereo and speakers
Glove Compartment
CD changer
Spare tire and accessories
1/2 of the gas in your tank
Floor mats
Passenger seat
and start putting this in your tank...
