Default Do I need to change the waterpump & thermostat when I do the timing belt on our '01 TT 225?

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/25673/picture_169.jpg"></center><p>I know it is suggested, but if we aren't keeping the car that long, is it necessary?

Is waterpump or thermostat failure common?

I have done the entire job on multiple B5 A4's but not a TT so I am looking to keep the job as simple as possible.

Thanks.

Default waterpump yes, thermostat no

the waterpump is generally what fails on the TT.

good luck. the job really isn't bad if you follow the writeup in the FAQ and have another set of hands.

Default You would be a fool not to, considering........

You've already done the hardest part in changing out the belt. The old waterpump has plastic impellers (I know, I know it's really a stupid design) which will break on you in time, if they haven' already. Make sure you put in one with metal impellers instead. And the thermostat will stick on you eventually so you might as well replace it as well.

Default And besides the wp only adds 5 minutes to the job

Technically you can skip the thermostat since it doesn't require taking the tb stuff off to change it.

Default Had my WP done when the TB was changed too....like eas ttq said, it reduces

the labor cost if getting it down by a garage, as when the TB is removed it's easy to get to the WP. It won't put a huge dent on the final cost

YES, the last thing you want is for either of those going out on you, or starting to leak. It is best just to do both and get it over with!

Default Skip the thermostat, the TB job does not make replacing the Thermostat any easier

There is no shared labor, only benefit is that you already have the coolant out. Failure of the thermostat is much more remote and a lot less dangerous even if it does fail. Add in the fact that you are planning on selling and it would be a big skip for me unless it was less than $50 to do.
