Can anybody tell me...
what specific function this thing does!?

It's located behind the center console.

I was checking out my A/C system again. I followed the lines all the way to the firewall. All of the lines that should be cold, were indeed cold. Underneath the glove box there's this black plastic box there that was cold as well. What the hell is that box called!? Is it possible to have something clogged in there!?
Also, is it safe to change this switch out without evacuating the whole A/C system free of freon!?
