A little help please (for my co-worker with a red 04 TT)
Dealer just said she snapped her timing belt, water pumps toast and destroyed a cylinder head.
Quoted well over $10K for the job.
I had little advice but suggested she either get a second opinion from my former independent mechanic, or contact her insurance agent and tell them that she ran over an object, which led up to these series of events.
She has always maintained the car, all service at the same Audi dealership its at currently.
They are obviously charging a lot, and I though my private mech would do much better, but thats before they contacted her with status.
This is a lot of stuff to fail for such a low milage, well kept vehicle but she's been out of warranty for 6 months now, the cars sitting there dead and she doesn't know what to do.
Suggestions or is she SOL and should just pawn it off for parts?

Contacting insurance agent is a non-starter.
Indie can do better. My CPO cost Audi US$5800 since they 'forgot' to change the tensioner properly. Engine failed 1K later: they paid for it all. US$10K seems steep.

Parts + head shaved and labor should be around 1,500 - 3K. Friend just repaired a Golf with 1.8T for around $1,500. Valve replacement, head shaved, TB kit (water pump, tensioner, idler, belt).
The pistons should be ok just a little dented.
Also tell her to have the TB replaced every 60K.
