Default HVAC readings for 49 and 51 steady at 90, but gauge reading 1 notch past middle suddenly

Hi,

I reviewed all posts doing a search, and couldn't find a case like mine. I had steady gauge readings for the 6 years I have had my 2002 TT.

After my last service, the gauge started to move freely past middle towards the next notch. Moving at speed moves the needle towards the right. High revs does the same. Low revs at speed moves it closer to middle. All tests with HVAC showed steady readings, a little hotter than 90 for reading 49 in some cases when I was gunningit.

I have removed the coolant res cap and will leave overnight to see if there are air bubbles cauing this, but am not confident. Does anyone have any insight as to what may be causing this, especially after not having any problems up until my last service? Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Diz

I'd put a new temp sensor in the car...

Beyond that you're probably looking at the cluster starting to fail..

What did they do at the last service and how many miles on the car?

Thanks for the follow up. The car is @ 25000 miles on it (garage queen). I had the the 60000 miles service done...coolant was checked and topped off according to the bill. Nothing else done.

FYI, I have the black sensor, and I just tried the trick of scraping the sensor rods in the reservoir with a screwdriver. Will see what happens tomorrow morning.

Oh, and I had the waterpump replaced almost 2 years ago (had an overheating problem then too, but was legit).

Default That's not the sensor Steve is talking about... >>

scraping the sensor within the coolant reservoir is the fix for your car thinking the coolant is low when it's really not--it doesn't have anything to do with reading coolant temps.

The coolant temp sensor is on the other side of the engine. It's really a 5-min fix. Check the link below.

Sorry, my mistake. I will try replacing the sensor and see what happens.

Thank you

Default Water Pump?

Just a thought...

Did you have the plastic impeller W/P replaced? If you are missing part of the impeller it may not be able to keep up with the heat of the engine.
