Default Clutch (slave cyl?) gave out today :( *Flatbed pics!*

So the issue I posted about last week, that no longer exhibited the symptoms and I thought I must be crazy, reared its ugly head today while I was driving. The clutch pedal went straight to the floor and the clutch was mated to the engine, and I was unable to shift. I couldn't even pump it for a LITTLE clutch action.

So, the car was stopped dead in a busy street in Waltham MA. Additionally, I was going slightly uphill. Right after a stop light. And I had a dog with me. And my girlfriend just got home in Salem (30 miles away) and I made her go back out to come back here - literally 1/10 mile from where she works. Oh, and my car died, 80 feet from a repair shop!!!

And my AAA expired a week ago. Ouch. So they renewed it over the phone then sent a flatbed.

I might as well replace the clutch while I'm in there.

Question - how is the OEM clutch kit and slave cylinder from ECS? At $330 and $100 respectively, are there better, cheaper options?

Oh, and my first ever flatbed (or towing!) pics!

Default Thanks...Only 39,600, it's a 2001...

It gives the fiancee fodder to ask me politely to sell it because of the ongoing maintenance costs. We got engaged and are getting married end of next year so she might have a point. Sighhhhhhhhhhh

Time will tell. Let's see how much this repair runs me first!

Re: Yikes! Mine is a 2001 w/ ~35K miles. Sign of things to come for me? Good luck.

Default Original post >>

I am expecting a quote from the shop soon. I thought I was imagining the symptoms but apparently I wasn't. It drove absolutely fine after that day, and up until last night, when, without any indication anything was wrong, it just gave up.

Going uphill.
In traffic.
80 feet from the shop where it is now.

Default $$$ Update: Estimate has been given $$$

Shop estimates $2300 worst case. Includes all labor and parts.

They haven't opened her up yet but in the worst case that they can't refinish the flywheel, they estimate $500 for clutch kit, $750 flywheel, and about $900 in labor, plus tax.

Ow. OW.

Hopefully they can machine the flywheel. I'm considering having them wait a couple days while I order the kit from ECS for $400 (incl slave cylinder), and IF they need a flywheel I'll overnight that bitch for $450 from ECS. THey would have to order one anyways and wait a few days for it.

They said the cost would hover around 1400ish without flywheel, because less work would be involved. Is this on par with a clutch replacement

Thoughts?

Default 'normally' you'll see signs of a leak at the slave, pooled on top of the tranny >

at least on the FWD, replacing the slave is external to the tranny and a really easy fix - if that's all, you should be in and out for two hundred bucks or so - an hour or so labor and the part. I'm not positive offhand on the slave on quattro's, but if it's internal, then maybe.

Perhaps someone can post the Bentley pic for a Q.

Default It's internal...which requires a lot more labor >>

Might as well replace the clutch while I'm in there. Hence the additional labor costs, and part costs.

If they can send the flywheel to the machine shop I'd rather do that than buy a new one.
