Default Problems with replacement ball joints

I know TTreker ran into this one too. I got new ball joints from autohausaz, part #8N0407365B, and they don't fit between the forks on the mk1 arms. Also, not sure if it is normal or not, once I realized they didn't fit right I removed the one I had already installed and didn't need to use the ball joint spreader tool, it didn't seem to seat entirely. I torqued the ball joint nut as much as possible, I don't think I could have gotten it much tigher.

I guess I'm left with removing some material from the new ball joints to make them fit unless someone else has an alternate part # for them. Thanks!

Default Strange . . . I ordered the same part number . . .

but from 1stvwparts (when they were accepting Audi part numbers). Is this unique to the Mk1 arms? Or is it the ball joint that is manufactured outside normal tolerances?

http://public.fotki.com/martt/audi_tt/photos-1/balljoint/</a

Default I'm not sure where the difference is, mine were B parts from autohaus

genuinevwaudiparts.com still lists A parts so I just ordered two of those. Hopefully the B's will fit on the blue car sometime down the road.

Default I got mine from Pure MotorSports. The were TRW. IIRC

Looked and fit identical to originals. I still have my originals. There was absolutely nothing wrong with them. I was just hunting that "TT Clunk". Same with the inner and outer tie rods. Changed those but nothing wrong with the old.

Now I've got a good used Dual Mass flywheel too, because I didn't want to risk it going bad later. If I keep this up , someday I'll have 2
TTs too. "One piece at a time. "

Default hey, just tested them on my mkI arms and....

They fit flush to the arm but they have to be all the way out to fit that way. No room to adjust inward. The backside of the ball is to large to slide in.

Funny thing is that I tested it in my 3rd mkI arm and they have about 3/4" of adjustment in on those with it still being flush to arm.?.?. The arms are same part both the 158 part number mkI's too.

Default I still have the clunk and the only thing I haven't changed yet is the ball joints

New sway bar links, poly bushings (without the sleeve on the bar), new front struts, new upper strut mounts, new tie-bar ends. It damn well better be the ball joint at this point but I'm betting it's 50/50

Default BTDT------ all of it. Still clunks sometimes. Half shaft splines ??????

It's a quirk that I have decided to live with.
