Update on Timing Belt Class Action
This was <a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/tt/msgs/1446900.phtml">covered in this post</a> as well as several others and it looks like there is an updated status/settlement. This is for model year 1999-2003 1.8T engines.

Preliminary approval of the settlement was granted by the court on May 19, 2008. Claim forms, class notice and other documentation will be mailed on or about August 1, 2008. The court will hold a hearing for final approval of the settlement on November 3, 2008.
Complete details regarding the terms of the settlement will be in the notice sent to owners of the class vehicles via U.S. Mail. However, to summarize, for qualifying class members, the settlement provides: (1) 100% reimbursement for Covered Engine Damage relating to timing belt failures, including repairing the vehicle, towing, alternate transportation, and lodging expense; (2) an extended warranty; and (3) a revised maintenance program.<ul><li><a href="http://www.psswplaw.com/CM/ClassActions/Volkswagen.asp">http://www.psswplaw.com/CM/ClassActions/Volkswagen.asp</a</li></ul>

excellent
especially for those that have lost engines....preliminary question: Will it cover subsequent TB R&R and their premature failures? or only on failures for originally, factory installed TB's? and is the extended warranty provision a by-product of the TB design and its relative high, prone to "unschedules/low mileage" failure rates? too soon to tell....

So, does revised maintenance schedule include replacement at lower mileage, or....
just replacement after failure?...obviously much less expensive to replace before failure.
I'm almost at 50k miles, 6 years....living on borrowed time...bout time to get it changed....along with the water pump and tensioner.

but i think that people are looking for the "free ride" on everything these days which promotes crap like that.
What they fail to realize is by doing this, you raise the price of goods to cover the lawyers fees.....
