Default Anyone have one of those slick, +10HP mods for the POS license plate light carriers?

I know it's a simple part, but really, one might think they'd get *this* right at least....taken mine apart x2 over the past 6 months, following Mike's FAQ write up, and both times they disintegrated while reinstalling. These things are among the biggest P'sOS on this car. I mean, whoever designed the crimped plastic "spring" that holds them on the car, which invariably cracks and falls off with every bulb replacement should clearly be shot. Since after that breaks, it won't stay put, it's now being held on once again by packing tape that will inevitably be flapping in the breeze in a few days, just like the last bulb change, so thought I'd check to see if anyone's found a better solution, before I go waste money on another one that will also crack the next time I have to change a bulb. Wish I could just epoxy it in there, but these bulbs don't last long. Grrrr... <<end of rant>> Hopefully someone's found a way around this, it's so obviously crap that I'm sure someone has found a better way...or should I just put a dab of silicon between the crap plastic holder and the trunklid?

FWIW, went with the 42 draft designs LED bulbs this time, we'll see how it goes. Initial results are quite positive.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, if anyone's come up with a solution for this.

Default how about one for 5$? >>>

same problem here....but you already figured it out!!!!
cleaned it with degreasing agent (simple green works or alcohol) and let dry.....Picked up some black silicone (clear works too)...apply to outer edge and hold in place for a minute or so...VOILA, done! ;-)

It is pretty easy to remove later....

Default I just taped one of those in place the other day >>

I'm not even sure how it broke as I never took it apart.

Default Did you see my note in the FAQ? I broke mine taking them out, not putting them back in.

On Mike's write up, I added an addendum because to me it wasn't too clear that you need to take them out from the inside edge (short side of the rectangle closest to the license plate) first, and then put them back in in reverse order. It worked for me, but I'm only on my second set, so I'm a novice to your pro-status. And I feel your pain. Mine flapped in the wind for a few days too. Very painful to endure for me.
Good luck with your 42DD, mine are going strong after about 5 months.

Default Great Hans, thanks!

Will give that a try. Mine that broke was the driver's side, although the way they crunch when they go back in has me convinced the passenger side one won't survive another bulb change either. It wasn't dirty or anything, it was the new one I installed 6 months ago or less with my last bulb change : (
But I'll take yours if that tab's still solid! : )

Thanks,

Rich

yep, doesn't take much to kill that "folded plastic spring tab", I'm sure normal use could do it..

Default cool, great to hear...

..and I'm very much teh novice here. Followed that exact plan, I think the folded plastic tab thing is just garbage. It's of about the same quality that the tamper proof milk jug caps are that you press to release the cap, pretty clearly defined for throwaway use.
Hoping the 42DD's last a long time so I never have to take these stupid things out again!! : )
Thanks,

Rich

Default Lol, I hear you. :) I consoled myself by thinking how nice and clean the

new ones were, and they were only $30 total from the dealer. I still don't understand why they're different prices, though...

Default if you are in there, do the passenger side too>>>

you can remove the lenses later with dental floss if need be...

Not sure why, but they are very brittle after 8yrs....

Default yep, replaced carriers+bulbs 6 months ago, now they've broken again with this bulb swap.

Trying the 42 designs LED's this time, hope they last forever, and I don't have to take these stupid carriers out again!

: )

Have a great time this week, wish I could be there!!!!
Hoist a glass in my absence, please.
